Election Eve in Coral Gables: Historic Ballot & a Big Opening
Coral Gables votes in its first November election Nov. 3. The ballot, La Pecora Bianca's Merrick Park debut, and news for office space in Coral Gables.
It's a big week to be in the Gables. The city votes in its first-ever November municipal election tomorrow, a celebrated New York Italian restaurant opens its doors at Merrick Park today, and the November calendar is already filling up with gallery nights and a first-of-its-kind Veterans Day ceremony on Giralda Plaza. Here's your Monday roundup of what's happening around town — and why it matters if you work in (or are shopping for) office space in Coral Gables.
Election Day Is Tomorrow — and It's Historic
For the first time in city history, Coral Gables holds its municipal election in November rather than April. Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 3, voters head to the polls following a voter-approved charter amendment that moved city elections to align with the countywide and statewide calendar, according to the Coral Gables Gazette.
Seven candidates qualified across three races. In the mayor's race, incumbent Vince Lago is seeking a fourth consecutive term against challengers Jackson "Rip" Holmes and Laureano Cancio. In Group IV, Commissioner Melissa Castro, first elected in 2023, faces Nestor Menendez, a former Planning and Zoning Board member. And Group V is an open seat — Commissioner Ariel Fernandez chose not to seek reelection — with Planning and Zoning Board member Gonzalo Sanabria running against Dominique "Nikki" Whiting, director of development for the Adam Smith Center at FIU. If any race requires a runoff, it's set for December 1.
Voters will also decide a notable charter question: whether to extend the mayor's term from two years to four, starting with the 2028 election. As CBS News Miami reported, Lago supports the change, noting commissioners already serve four-year terms; whoever wins tomorrow will serve a two-year term either way.
For business owners, this election matters more than most. The next commission will shape decisions on development, permitting, parking, and the streetscape investments that keep Miracle Mile and downtown Coral Gables among the most desirable business addresses in the Miami office market.
La Pecora Bianca Opens at Merrick Park Today
Your client-lunch rotation just got stronger. La Pecora Bianca, the Italian restaurant group with ten New York City locations, officially opens its first restaurant outside New York today, November 2, at the Shops at Merrick Park, according to Forbes. At roughly 300 seats, it's one of the brand's largest — an indoor-outdoor space with a palm-shaded garden and a wraparound bar of about 20 seats, designed by Miami-based Urban Robot. Expect housemade pastas, Neapolitan-style pizzas, and an aperitivo-focused drink program, with around 100 new jobs coming to the neighborhood.
It's the latest arrival in a restaurant wave that has reshaped Gables dining this fall — we covered the openings along Miracle Mile in our recent restaurant roundup.
Mark Your Calendar: Gallery Night and a Veterans Day First
Two dates worth blocking off. This Friday, November 6, Gables Gallery Night returns from 6 to 10 p.m., with downtown galleries and the Coral Gables Museum open late — an easy, walkable after-work outing if your office is anywhere near Aragon Avenue.
Then on Wednesday, November 11, the city hosts its first Coral Gables Salute to Veterans on Giralda Plaza, with a 9 a.m. ceremony featuring the presentation of colors, the national anthem, and recognition of veterans from each branch of the armed forces. Commissioner Richard Lara, who sponsored the event, has said he hopes it becomes an annual tradition on the plaza.
One planning note for the season: with the G20 Leaders' Summit coming to Miami in mid-December, the city has reportedly been scheduling some holiday events earlier than usual, so keep an eye on the city's events calendar if you're planning office outings.
Why Weeks Like This Make the Case for the Gables
A municipal election run with countywide efficiency, a marquee restaurant brand choosing Merrick Park for its first expansion outside New York, and a civic calendar that turns plazas into gathering places — this is the texture that makes office rental in Coral Gables different from leasing a floor in a commodity tower. Clients can walk to lunch, teams have somewhere to go after work, and the city keeps investing in the streets around your front door. It's a big part of why demand for executive suites in Coral Gables has stayed strong even as the broader market tightens — something we broke down in our guide to Coral Gables office neighborhoods.
